GREEN MEETINGS
![]() |
In 2024, the IMF has achieved the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 20121 Certification for Sustainable Events for the Spring and Annual Meetings that are held on the Fund’s Washington campus. |
The ISO 20121 is the internationally recognized standard that looks specifically at the sustainability aspects of events. It covers environmental, social, and economic issues, including resource utilization and conservation, choice of materials, supply chains, emissions reduction, accessibility, equity, and impact on the local economy. It also requires organizers to show how they consider sustainable development issues when choosing suppliers/vendors. Find out more here
The IMF is increasingly embedding environmental sustainability considerations into decision making for its business operations. With the establishment in 2021 of an Environmental Sustainability Council, led by senior staff, the IMF is putting greater emphasis on the Fund’s own carbon footprint and ways to mitigate its operational impact, while continuing to effectively serve the membership. Recent efforts have included removal of plastic in food operations, changes in building operations to lower energy usage, and implementation of a hybrid work model that significantly reduces employee commuting.
