Africa

Lerato Mbele is an international broadcaster, TV personality, and media consultant with a passion for Africa and its development.  

She is the co-owner of “Moon Landing Media” (pty) Ltd and proprietor of the African Leadership Dialogues series. She also hosts a daily talk show and podcast titled “PowerTalk with Lerato Mbele” at Power987 in her native South Africa.  

Prior to this Lerato spent nine years as a TV presenter and broadcaster for BBC World News, hosting the main Africa-focused business shows and international documentaries for programming that linked Africa’s relationships in global trade, commerce, and international development institutions. 

Lerato has also been a senior business anchor at CNBC Africa and a prime-time news anchor in her native South African Broadcast Corporation. She has worked as a foreign policy researcher and advisor, in her capacity as head of the multiparty democracy programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs and was co-editor of the book “Designing Democracy in Africa” with Ayesha Kajee.

Kristalina Georgieva

Kristalina Georgieva is the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the IMF since its inception in 1944. Before joining the Fund, Ms. Georgieva was Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank and also served as Interim President for a time. Previously, she served at the European Commission as Vice President for Budget and Human Resources – and as Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. She was named “European of the Year” and “Commissioner of the Year” by European Voice for her leadership in the European Union’s humanitarian response to crises.

Ajay Banga began his five-year term as World Bank Group President on June 2, 2023.

Ajay Banga most recently served as Vice Chairman at General Atlantic. Previously, he was President and CEO of Mastercard, a global organization with nearly 24,000 employees.  Under his leadership, MasterCard launched the Center for Inclusive Growth, which advances equitable and sustainable economic growth and financial inclusion around the world. He was Honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chairman from 2020-2022. He became an advisor to General Atlantic’s climate-focused fund, BeyondNetZero, at its inception in 2021. Banga served as Co-Chair of the Partnership for Central America, a coalition of private organizations that works to advance economic opportunity across underserved populations in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. He was previously on the Boards of the American Red Cross, Kraft Foods, and Dow Inc.

Ajay Banga is a co-founder of The Cyber Readiness Institute and was Vice Chair of the Economic Club of New York. He was awarded the Foreign Policy Association Medal in 2012, the Padma Shri Award by the President of India in 2016, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Business Council for International Understanding’s Global Leadership Award in 2019, and the Distinguished Friends of Singapore Public Service Star in 2021.

 

Mark Carney

Mark Carney is the Co-Chair for the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action, Chair of Brookfield Asset Management, and Head of Transition Investing at Brookfield Corporation. Across these roles, he is focused on developing tools, guidance, and products for investors that will combine positive social and environmental outcomes with strong risk-adjusted returns.

Mr. Carney was previously Governor of the Bank of England (from 2013 to 2020) and Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008 to 2013). Internationally, Mr. Carney was Chair of the Financial Stability Board (2011 to 2018), chaired the Global Economy Meeting and Economic Consultative Committee of the Bank for International Settlements (2018 to 2020), and served as First Vice Chair of the European Systemic Risk Board (2013 to 2020). Prior to his governorships, Mr. Carney worked at Goldman Sachs as well as the Canadian Department of Finance.

He is a long-time and well-known advocate for sustainability, specifically with regard to the management and reduction of climate risks.

 

Leila Benali
Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Morocco

Leila Benali is a Moroccan engineer, economist and politician. Since October 2021 she has been the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

Education: She studied engineering at the Ecole Central de Paris and Ecole Mohammadia School and obtained a Master of Science in engineering. Besides she also received a Master of Science in Politics and a PhD in economics from Sciences Po in Paris. From 2002 to 2015 she lectured Energy Strategies at Sciences Po.

Professional career: Between 2002 and 2013, she worked for energy and defense research and consulting firm Cambridge Energy Research Associates, later IHS and S&P Platts. During this period, she worked on projects for governments and international companies, focusing on energy policy, master planning and strategic investment. Notable roles and achievements during this period included managing a high-level assignment for a government, focused on developing a roadmap and optimizing fuel/energy supply in a sensitive geopolitical environment. She also led a study entitled "Thirst for Growth" on long-term gas and electricity trends in the MENA region. In addition, she held a key position in institutional analysis for a major oil and gas producer during its energy sector review. She was a key member of IHS CERA's contribution to the development of a national economic strategy in Libya, while maintaining ongoing liaison with OPEC (IHS CERA was one of six secondary sources used by OPEC to monitor its members' crude oil production). Between 2014 and 2018 she directed the gas and energy policy for the Saudi Aramco before becoming the chief economist of APICORP in 2018. She was a member of the Global Future Council Member on mobility of the World Economic Forum from 2018 to 2021. In March 2021, she was elected as the Chief Economist of the International Energy Forum in Riyadh. Leila Benali was a member of the Special Commission on the New Development Model.
