OVERVIEW

Join us for a 45-minute session that provides an overview of the IMF’s online learning program and its new course on the IMF’s supplementary international reserve asset, the Special Drawing Right (SDR), presented by the Finance Department (FIN) and the Institute for Capacity Development (ICD). The discussion will delve into the significance of SDRs in the international monetary system, examining allocations, common uses, and other key topics covered in the course, such as the SDR valuation and SDR operations. It will conclude with an expert interview featuring a representative from the Government of Japan, who will share Japan’s experience with SDR channeling. 

This session promises to enhance understanding and foster dialogue on the vital role of SDRs today.

Michaela Erbenova

Deputy Director, Institute for Capacity Development, IMF 

  

 

Ms. Michaela Erbenova, a Deputy Director in the IMF Institute for Capacity Development, oversees the Fund's capacity development strategy and evaluation; the IMF Institute Training Program, including its global network of Regional Training Centers; the online training program and the Internal Economics Training for Fund staff. 

Her previous Fund career encompassed more than 10 years in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department as a financial sector expert; mission chief in several FSAPs and a Division Chief of Financial Supervision and Regulation Division. In 2016-2018, she served on the IMF Executive Board as Executive Director for Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Republic of Kosovo, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Turkey. Prior to joining the IMF, Ms. Erbenova was a Board Member and Chief Executive Director of the Czech National Bank. Previously, she served as Advisor to the Czech Prime Minister; Chief Advisor to the Minister of Finance; and as Head of Investor Relations in Komercni Banka – country’s second largest bank. She holds MA in mathematical methods in economy from Moscow State University and Ph.D. in economics from the Charles University in Prague. She has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2006. 

 

   

Jane Mburu

Division Chief, Finance Department, IMF

  

Ms. Jane Mburu is a Division Chief in the Financial Operations and Reporting Division of the Finance Department.  Ms. Mburu has been at the IMF for about 23 years working on a range of IMF financial policies, operations, financial reporting, safeguards assessments, and systems implementation. She led the operational implementation of the 2021 SDR allocation, including the IMF’s efforts to expand and strengthen the SDR Voluntary Trading Arrangements (VTAs), which support the liquidity of the SDR. She currently oversees the SDR trading market to ensure its continued smooth functioning and supports members in their use of SDRs. Prior to joining the IMF, she worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers Kenya and Canada as well as Export Development Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Nairobi and Masters in Business Administration from the McGill University and a is Certified Public Accountant (Kenya). 

 

 
 

Kentaro Ogata

Deputy Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Japan

  

Mr. Kentaro Ogata, Deputy Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, also Chair of G7 Digital Payment Expert Group, assumed the current position in July 2023 after serving as Deputy Vice Minister for International Affairs (2021-2023), Director of Planning and Administration (2020) and Director of International Organizations (2018-2020, in charge of IMF matters as well as the G20 Finance Track under the Japanese presidency) of the International Bureau. As finance deputy’s deputy (acting), he oversees G7 and G20 matters. Prior to these, he assumed several director positions in the Tax Bureau (2014-2017, in charge of international tax policy) as well as in the International Bureau (in charge of foreign exchange markets and development issues). He worked twice at the IMF (Fiscal Affairs Department) from 2001 to 2005 and from 2010 to 2013, where he served as fiscal economist in country teams (Timor-Leste, Kosovo and Kyrgyz Republic), participated in technical assistance missions (Cambodia, Estonia, Mexico and Slovakia; and Moldova as mission chief). He has extensive experience in international tax issues, covering domestic legislations, bilateral tax treaties and multilateral discussions, particularly on OECD’s base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) project. He holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Tokyo (1992) and an MBA from University of Maryland (1996).
